The Unethical Medical Issues

The story of Henrietta Lacks is a tragedy and demonstrates the harsh reality of the unethical issues that are pervasive throughout the United States healthcare system. Her struggle to receive the proper medical care at John Hopkins speaks volumes to the obstacles that were in place in order for black people to receive proper medical care especially in a time where Jim Crow laws and racism are alive and well.

The carelessness on the part of the doctors was astounding but not surprising. The author was able to vividly portray the significant impact that Henrietta Lacks’ cancer cells had on medical research, which contributed to breakthroughs that influenced and benefited the health of millions of people. Throughout the book there were several themes but I believed the ones with the most influence on her story included morality, racism, poverty, and linguistic barriers.
