The foundation of the CDC was created in 1942 during World War II under the name Office of National Defense Malaria Control Activities. It started off as a branch of the US Public Health Service. The headquarters is in Georgia since malaria was common in the southeast region of the US. Later in 1946 they changed named and were then called the Communicable Disease Center. During its early years the CDC pursued mostly malaria with 50% of their staff engaged in it. There were few medical personnel in their small original staff of 400.
