The HIV/AIDS PandemicAccording to the UNAIDS/WHO AIDS epidemic update (December, 2005), there are over 40 million people infected with the virus worldwide, and more than 60% of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) live in sub-Saharan Africa. There was a recorded total of 3.1 AIDS deaths in 2005 alone, and approximately eight times more deaths since 1981 (UNAIDS, July 2004).
