DEMOCRATS SAY RNC IGNORES TRUMP RECORD ON CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC, ECONOMY

As speaker after speaker took the stage at the Republican National Convention on Monday, Democrats reminded voters of what was not being said by President Donald Trump and his surrogates, and furiously fact-checking what they did say.

Democrats were especially focused on drawing attention to what they considered the largest elephant in the room at the RNC: the president's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. The effort to remind voters of the consequences of the virus was encapsulated in a Democratic National Committee ad released early Monday, titled, "Republican National Chaos."

"Trump is meeting the COVID moment with job-destroying incompetence and deadly mismanagement," the ad alleged.

Here's a look at other ways Democrats sought to keep COVID-19 in the spotlight, and how they reacted to other themes and speakers on the first day of the RNC program.

The pandemic

Republicans at the convention praised the president for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, highlighting his Jan. 31 partial ban on travel from China and what they described as his rapid response to the outbreak.

"The President quickly took action and shut down travel from China," said Donald Trump Jr. "As the virus began to spread, the president acted quickly and ensured ventilators got to the hospitals that needed them most. He delivered PPE to our brave frontline workers."

Democrats responded by pointing to what they see as the president's initial denials of the severity of the outbreak, his lack of a comprehensive strategy and a massive death toll that could have been avoided.

Democratic nominee Joe Biden told Trump, "it didn't have to be this bad," in a tweet.

"The only person responsible for our failed COVID response is Donald Trump," Biden said in another tweet.

"Things not mentioned tonight at the RNC: There are over 177,000 Americans who have lost their lives to COVID-19, yet Donald Trump still doesn’t have a national testing strategy," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a tweet.

"While Trump and the RNC lie about his failed response to the coronavirus, we're holding him accountable for the more than 5.7 million cases and 175,000 deaths that have happened under his watch," the Democratic National Committee tweeted from its campaign "War Room" account.
