Bonds of history, culture and faithfulness associate Pakistan and Bangladesh to each other. The people of the two countries shared a ‘common nationhood’ for almost twenty-five years and even after separation it has not been easy to sever the links rooted deep in their history. However, Pakistan-Bangladesh relations had a bad start primarily because of two reasons. First, Bangladesh was born out of a bloody conflict with a military regime ruling the country from Islamabad. Secondly, Bangladesh gained freedom with help from India and remained under its influence for sometime. Neither Pakistan nor Bangladesh could overcome the shock of separation and took time to adjust themselves to the new reality. The physical estrangement of a thousand miles between the two wings without a common border, and being surrounded by Indian Territory and influences, led to constant political, economic and social conflicts between the two wings; embittering relations bringing the country on the verge of
